Hello Kitty Island Adventure Purple Rain is a short main-story quest from Lala on Cloud Island in which Kiki repairs the Cloud Router and brings TOPHAT back after he vanishes. To unlock it, finish all four parts of The Mystery Tree and then wait for the next daily reset. Once the reset passes, talk to Lala near the Cloud Router to start it.
This guide reflects the official wiki as of October 16, 2026, after the version 3.0 Welcome Home update. Purple Rain first arrived with version 1.2, which reached Apple Arcade in September 2023, and small details can differ by platform and version.

The wiki does not list any items to hand in or any item rewards for Purple Rain, so think of it as a story chapter rather than a grind. What makes the Purple Rain quest worth doing right away is what it opens: TOPHAT comes back, and the next chapter of the main story becomes available. The quest belongs to The Island Mystery category, the one with the blue top hat and question mark symbol in your Quests app.

How to unlock the Purple Rain quest
If you are wondering how to unlock the Purple Rain quest in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, the short answer is The Mystery Tree. Purple Rain unlocks the next reset after you finish The Mystery Tree: Part 4, and nothing else is listed as a requirement. The work is really in getting The Mystery Tree itself to show up, because that series has several prerequisites of its own.
| Step | Quest | What the wiki says you need |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Stargazing (main story) | Complete A Challenging Rescue and Baker's Assistant; start it at night |
| 2 | Fish Noir (friendship) | Badtz-maru friendship level 11 and Comic Relief |
| 3 | Swimming Lessons (friendship) | Retsuko friendship level 17, plus Fire Up the Volcano, Bring Back the Swing and the Potion Hunt series |
| 4 | The Mystery Tree, Parts 1 to 4 | Pompompurin friendship level 13, plus Stargazing, Fish Noir and Swimming Lessons |
| 5 | Purple Rain | The next reset after The Mystery Tree: Part 4 |
Stargazing matters twice over, because it is also the quest that unlocks Cloud Island, Kiki and Lala. The two friendship quests in the middle are easy to overlook. Fish Noir and Swimming Lessons are friendship quests, not main-story quests, yet The Mystery Tree will not appear until both are finished. If your story seems stuck after Cloud Island opens, check your levels with Badtz-maru, Retsuko and Pompompurin first, and see the quest overview for how the wider story fits together.
The Mystery Tree also has a built-in wait. After each of its four parts you must wait until the following reset before the next part starts. Counting the reset before Purple Rain, the earliest you can reach it is four resets after you begin Part 1.
03
The Mystery Tree parts and materials to prepare
Each part of The Mystery Tree begins with Retsuko and her investigation team near the Hot Springs on Mount Hothead. Parts 3 and 4 ask for materials, so it pays to stock up before you start.
| Part | What happens | Items needed |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1 | Talk to Cinnamoroll, Tuxedosam, Hangyodon and Badtz-maru, meet Chococat in Spooky Swamp, then speak to Pochacco and Pompompurin | None |
| Part 2 | Take a Camera selfie with Hangyodon, Badtz-maru and Keroppi, then bring a Dark Water sample to Chococat | Dark Water, collected during the quest |
| Part 3 | Pay Kiki on Cloud Island, see the broken Cloud Router, then give Chococat materials | 1 Starry Skies Shake, 10 Starfruit, 10 Moon Cheese |
| Part 4 | Craft the Cloudlight, use it on the Dark Water near the Comedy Club, then give the Cloud Router to Kiki | 20 Lotus Blossom, 20 Magma Bloom, 20 Sakura, plus the Cloud Core from Chococat |
Here is where the wiki says each material comes from and how many respawn per day:
| Material | Where to find it | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| Starfruit | Trees around Cloud Island | 12 |
| Moon Cheese | On the ground around Cloud Island | 11 |
| Lotus Blossom | Lilypads in Seaside Resort and Spooky Swamp | 14 |
| Magma Bloom | Around Mount Hothead, or up to 14 per game of the Red Hot Rampage mini-game | 7 |
| Sakura | Trees in Merry Meadow | 22 |
Magma Bloom is the slow one. At seven a day, twenty takes about three days of picking unless you play Red Hot Rampage, so start saving early. Sakura grows in Merry Meadow, which the Curious Caverns quest unlocks, so you need that area open too. The Starry Skies Shake is a dessert made from Snowcicle and Starfruit at the Dessert Machine inside the Dessert Boat in Gemstone Mountain, and it needs the upgraded machine that comes with friendship level 13 with Pompompurin. The recipes guide covers cooking in more detail.
At the end of Part 4, Kiki repairs the Cloud Router, but it malfunctions. TOPHAT becomes overloaded with memories and disappears. The wiki notes that TOPHAT stays gone until you complete Purple Rain, which is the story's way of pointing you straight to the next quest.

Purple Rain walkthrough step by step
Once the reset after Part 4 has passed, the quest itself is quick. According to the wiki, it plays out like this:
- Open the Menu Tablet in the upper right corner, choose the Quests app and look under The Island Mystery for Purple Rain. Its goal is to have Lala fix the Cloud Router and bring TOPHAT back.
- Travel to Cloud Island and find Lala standing near the Cloud Router.
- Talk to Lala. Big Challenges joins in and explains how distressed he is that his best friend TOPHAT vanished after the Cloud Router was activated.
- Kiki uses his magic to fix the Cloud Router, and TOPHAT reappears.
- TOPHAT says he feels disoriented, and Big Challenges tells him to rest. That completes the quest.
There is no fetch list, so you can finish this the moment it appears. If you lose track of where to go, the Quest Guide (a glowing orb that floats above your character) points the way. You can keep it on with the "Always show Quest Guide" toggle under Gameplay in the tablet's Settings app.

What Purple Rain unlocks
Finishing Purple Rain opens up several things, so it is worth doing the same day it appears.
- Friendship Never Fades. This three-part main-story series starts the next reset after Purple Rain, as long as you have friendship level 7 with Big Challenges. TOPHAT gives it, and Part 1 begins on the beach at Seaside Resort. Part 3 asks you to bring a Best Friend to the Heart of the Island, which means a resident at maximum friendship who can act as your companion. Raising one friend that high ahead of time saves a stall later, and the gift guide helps with that. The series unlocks the Island Spirit and one Spirit Heart with any Best Friend.
- Secret Haunts. This TOPHAT friendship quest lists The Mystery Tree series and Purple Rain as requirements, and it unlocks the next reset after you finish Magma Master. It is day three of TOPHAT's Island Challenge, a secret-location photo hunt hosted by Kuromi that starts in Spooky Swamp, and it leads into Chococat's Tremendous Trivia.
- TOPHAT himself. Because TOPHAT is missing between The Mystery Tree: Part 4 and Purple Rain, anything that needs him, such as talking to him or giving him gifts, waits until this quest is done.

Purple Rain quest not showing? Fixes to try
When players search for help with HKIA Purple Rain, the problem is almost always timing or a missed prerequisite. Work through these checks in order.
Wait for the daily reset. Purple Rain never appears on the same day you finish The Mystery Tree: Part 4. The wiki's Game Mechanics page puts the daily reset at 12:00 AM Mountain Time, which it lists as 7:00 AM GMT, or 6:00 AM GMT during daylight saving time. A couple of other wiki pages list those two GMT times the other way round, so midnight Mountain Time is the safest reference. At reset, materials respawn, friends' daily gift limits refresh, daily quests change and time-locked quests such as this one can become available.
Confirm all four Mystery Tree parts are done. Each part needs its own reset, so it is easy to think you have finished the series when Part 3 or Part 4 is still open. Check your Quests app for any remaining Mystery Tree entry.
Check The Mystery Tree prerequisites. If The Mystery Tree never appeared at all, you are missing Stargazing, Fish Noir, Swimming Lessons or friendship level 13 with Pompompurin. Stargazing also gives you access to Cloud Island, so without it you cannot reach Lala anyway.
Do not change your device clock. The game reads real-life time from your device's system clock. The developers strongly advise against moving the date forward or back to skip waits, because it can break events, stop items from respawning and even disable multiplayer.
Check for Friendship Never Fades next. If Purple Rain is already done and nothing new appeared, the next series also needs friendship level 7 with Big Challenges, so gift him or do his quests.
