This Hello Kitty Island Adventure gift guide comes down to one rule: every friend has three liked tags, and the best gift is the single item that matches all three. That item shows three hearts in the gift menu. Examples are Pumpkin Spice Soda for Kuromi, Mama's Pudding for Pompompurin and Red Bow Apple Pie for Hello Kitty. You can normally give each friend three gifts per day. The table below lists all 22 island residents with their liked tags, 3-heart gift, backup gifts, return gift and birthday.
The data reflects the official Hello Kitty Island Adventure Wiki as checked on October 16, 2026, after the free Welcome Home update (version 3.0), which Steam news announced on October 8, 2026. Apple Arcade usually gets new content first, and two friends (Cogimyun and Usahana) need DLC that is paid outside Apple Arcade. So availability can differ by platform and version. This HKIA gift guide only lists characters and items the wiki documents.

How gifting and friendship levels work
To give a gift, walk up to a friend and press the gift icon. The menu only shows items that friend will accept. You earn Friendship XP in two ways: gifting, and finishing quests about that friend, mainly Daily Quests and Friendship Quests. Higher levels unlock quests, avatar palettes, companion abilities, crafting plans and recipes, so gifting is how the story moves forward.
Friendship has four tiers: New Friend, Good Friend, Close Friend and Best Friend. At Good Friend you can usually hand over up to three of the same item at once. Each friend's return gift goes up by one at Good Friend and by one more at Close Friend. Once you are Best Friends, friends give you a Character Gift Box instead of their usual return gift.
Max levels are not the same for everyone. The wiki lists TOPHAT at 10, Chococat at 15, Hello Kitty at 25, and Usahana and Cogimyun at 35. The Friends app on your Menu Tablet shows who you haven't gifted yet today.

Hearts, liked tags and 3-heart gifts
Every item can have up to four tags, and every resident has exactly three liked tags. The hearts in the gift menu show how many of an item's tags that friend likes: one, two or three. An item's rarity has no effect on its value. Only tags matter.
Each tag also has a hidden value. The game never shows the Friendship XP a gift is worth, but the number of return gifts you get back is a good stand-in. The gift menu sorts items by hearts first and then by value, so the top item is usually your best choice. On the wiki's Gifting page, 3-heart gifts are "always worth the most," so the Hello Kitty Island Adventure best gifts are always each friend's 3-heart items.
At Best Friends, gift value stops mattering and only hearts count. A 1-heart gift earns a small character box, a 2-heart gift a medium box, and a 3-heart gift a regular box, which has a chance to contain a Character Hat. Most items you hand over during quests do not raise friendship. The Welcome Gifts from the early "Small Gift Big Smile" and "Missing Friends, Missing Gifts" quests are the exception: they are meant to start each friendship.

Daily gift limits and ways to stretch them
The daily limit is three gifts per friend, and it refreshes at the daily reset. Giving a Friendship Blossom resets one friend's limit, and a Friendship Bouquet resets everyone's. The wiki says both come mostly from My Melody's Daily Rewards, and she stops handing them out while you hold three.
Companions help too. Hello Kitty's "Everyone's Friend" ability, unlocked at her level 12, adds 10% friendship to gifts you give while she is with you. My Melody's "Big Smile" adds an extra return gift but no extra friendship. Hello Kitty's "Sous Chef" can double cooked food, and Chococat's "Master Crafter" can double crafted items, which makes it cheaper to stock up on gifts. Welcome Home added Character Mailboxes. Once you finish the "Gifts Galore" quest, build a friend's Home and reach Close Friend, you can build their mailbox for 3 Cornerstones. Each mailbox holds up to 10 item stacks. At the daily reset, it delivers gifts to fill any slots you didn't use that day. In version 3.0 only some friends can get Homes, so not everyone has a mailbox yet. The /guides/homes page covers building them.

Here are the Hello Kitty Island Adventure favorite gifts for every resident. Liked tags, 3-heart gifts and backups come from the wiki's Character Gift Guide and each character page. Birthdays come from the wiki's Birthdays list. "Backups" are 2-heart items the wiki lists for each friend.

Big Challenges has no birthday listed in his infobox ("???"), though the wiki's Birthdays page lists a celebration for him in mid-December. Every friend has a Birthday Celebration each year. The first time you give a friend their birthday cake during it, you get special dialogue.

Where to find friends you unlock later
Badtz-maru, Chococat, Hello Kitty, My Melody, Pochacco and Tuxedosam are in Seaside Resort from the start. Keroppi and Kuromi live in Spooky Swamp, and Pekkle and Pompompurin are in Gemstone Mountain. You can reach Retsuko near Mount Hothead after the "Power Up the Gate" quest. To reach Hangyodon, you need the Snorkel from Kuromi's level 6 quest. You meet Cinnamoroll during Kuromi's level 1 quest.
The rest unlock through quests. Wish me mell's quests start after you pick up a Lost Doll, in an area that opens after My Melody's level 11 quest. My Sweet Piano's quests start at My Melody level 15. Big Challenges and TOPHAT need you to unlock and climb Icy Peak. Kiki and Lala also need Hello Kitty at level 17. Moppu's quests open after you have 5 Spirit Hearts and repair the Arctifier.
Usahana's quests need level 7 with Badtz-maru, Keroppi, Kuromi, Chococat and Cinnamoroll, plus level 4 with Pochacco. Cogimyun lives only in Wheatflour Wonderland. New players can find the route in /guides/beginners.

Pompompurin and Kuromi gifts
Pompompurin likes Dessert, Dairy and Relax. His 3-heart gift, Mama's Pudding, is made at the Dessert Machine from Cactus Cream, Banana and Coral Milk. The wiki says that machine upgrade comes from Pompompurin's level 13 reward. Before then, Pudding (2-heart) is the wiki's pick, once you have his level 4 quest done and the Snorkel. Cheese Ice Cream (also 2-heart) works after you reach Cloud Island. His birthday is April 16.
Kuromi likes Spooky, Fall and Soda. Pumpkin Spice Soda (Pumpkin, Fizzy Crystal and Cinna Bloom at the Soda Machine) is her 3-heart pick. For early-game options, her October 31 birthday event and her Welcome Home house, see /guides/kuromi.

Tags, furniture and visitors
Tags aren't just for gifts. The same system labels food, materials, clothes and furniture. Some tags, like Aquatic or Bakery, show up on many kinds of items, while others, like Antique, are furniture tags that certain visitors need in their cabins. That's why /guides/furniture-tags is useful for both gifting and decorating. Welcome Home uses tags too. The wiki's Home plans for Hello Kitty, Kuromi and Pompompurin each call for three items of every one of that friend's liked tags, plus a few specific items such as their own furniture.
Visitors work differently, so check /guides/visitors for them. They have no friendship levels. Instead, they have a Star Rating that goes up by one each time you complete their daily Request. At 5 stars you can invite them to move into their cabin for good. Visitors also have a single liked tag that affects cabin hearts, which is separate from the three liked tags residents use for gifts.
Marroncream, who arrived with Welcome Home, is classed as a special character on the wiki for now, not a giftable friend. The wiki says it is unknown whether she will become a friend later.

Quick gifting checklist
Give all three daily gifts to the friends whose quests you need most. Bring Hello Kitty along as your companion once she has "Everyone's Friend." Cook or craft each friend's 3-heart item when you can, and keep 2-heart backups for days when ingredients run short. Save Friendship Bouquets for days when you have plenty of good gifts ready, and once you have Close Friends with Homes, fill their mailboxes.
