Hello Kitty Island Adventure multiplayer is online co-op for two players: one person hosts, and a single guest visits the host's island. You start a session from the Multiplayer app on your Menu Tablet by sharing a short-lived code. There is no crossplay between platforms, both players need the same game version, and Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 players currently can't play together. The official wiki also says each player needs their own save on their own device, so there is no documented couch or split-screen mode.
This guide reflects the Welcome Home update (version 3.0, released on all platforms on October 8, 2026) and the official wiki and store pages as they read on October 16, 2026. Multiplayer rules can change with patches and differ by platform, so trust your in-game menus if something here doesn't match.
01
How many players and what you need
Co-op is capped at two players, the host and one guest, and each of you plays your own save. Multiplayer is optional: the wiki notes it isn't needed for story progress and most quests aren't built for co-op, but a few rewards can only be earned together.
| Platform | What online play needs | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Arcade (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV) | Internet connection, Game Center allowed | Different Apple devices can play together on the same version |
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account | Switch 1 and Switch 2 can't currently play together |
| PlayStation 5 | PlayStation Plus | Store page lists up to 2 online players |
| Steam (PC) | Internet connection | Store page lists Online Co-op |
Before your first session, check that online play is switched on. From the title screen, open Settings with the gear icon, choose Permissions, and make sure "Allow Online" is on.
02
How to start a co-op session
To unlock everything, the wiki says to finish "Small Gift Big Smile" (My Melody's early gift-delivery quest) and start "Friends From Afar." Keroppi offers Friends From Afar after you complete "Open the Nature Preserve," which needs friendship level 2 with him and the Resort Gate opened. If you're still early, the beginner guide covers that route, and the quest guide lists what comes next.
Hosting
- Open the Menu Tablet.
- Select the Multiplayer app.
- Copy your code and send it to your friend.
- Leave the Multiplayer app open until your friend is connecting.
Codes are temporary: they can change if you reopen the app and expire within a few minutes anyway. "Send Code" creates a long invitation with a large image, so to copy just the code, use the rectangular icon in a circle to its right.
Joining
You have two ways in. Open the Menu Tablet, pick Multiplayer and choose "Join Friend," or press "Join Friend" right on the title screen. Enter the code, and you'll see a loading screen while the host's island loads.
No one to play with? The wiki points to the official Discord. Codes aren't allowed in its general channels or DMs; use the "Unlock Multiplayer" channel to get the Multiplayer role and its platform channels.
03
Crossplay, cross-platform and Switch 2
Hello Kitty Island Adventure crossplay is not supported. Per the wiki, a Sunblink team member explained that players must be on the same update version to connect, platforms rarely run the same version at once, and the studio lacks the budget for its own always-on server or some platforms' cross-play fees. Moving a save between platforms isn't supported either.
Different devices on the same platform do work. An iPhone player can join someone on a Mac or Apple TV, as long as both run the same version.
Nintendo is the exception to watch. The wiki says Switch and Switch 2 players can't play together right now because the two versions run on different versions of the Unity engine. The developers haven't promised a fix, though Switch and Switch 2 saves are still compatible with each other. For editions and update timing, see the platforms guide and the updates page.
04
Can you play local co-op on the same Switch?
Not according to the sources we reviewed. The wiki says multiplayer requires both players to have their own saves and separate devices. The store pages describe online play only: Nintendo lists Online Play as a Nintendo Switch Online feature and one player on a single system, PlayStation lists up to two online players, and Steam lists Online Co-op. None mention local or split-screen play.
So for Hello Kitty Island Adventure multiplayer on Switch, plan on two consoles of the same generation, each online with Nintendo Switch Online. The game only checks that the two saves are different, so on some platforms two saves on one account can play together from different devices.
05
What's shared, and what stays with the host
Guests play by the host's rules, and most progress stays on the host's save:
- Tools and stamina: the guest gets the same tools and stamina as the host, including cooking station repairs and upgrades.
- Inventory: the guest keeps their own inventory. Special items such as Strawberry Crates and quest items stay locked to the island owner's save.
- Recipes and plans: recipes, crafting plans and instructions are not shared between players.
- Shops: the guest can use the host's shops and event stands, but some items may be hidden if the guest has never obtained them.
- Quests: guests can't start or finish most quests, whether the host's or their own, but they can help the host with them.
- Companions: a guest can't bring an Island Resident along, but the host's active Hello Kitty (Sous Chef), Chococat (Master Crafter) or Retsuko (Hot Stuff) ability is shared. Tuxedosam's Negotiator is a known bug and doesn't work for guests.
- Materials: what the guest picks up doesn't reach the host until Shared Pickup at friendship level 15, so ask before gathering on someone's island.
- Challenges and mini games: guests can't earn Challenge Course trophy pieces, but share prizes from mini games where both players collect items (not Gem Match, Seapony Racing or Crane Craze).
- DLC: a player without a DLC can't receive or keep its items and may not be able to visit its areas or use most features there.
A February 2025 Steam hotfix note also made the Dye Station unusable for guests.
06
Multiplayer friendship levels
Hello Kitty Island Adventure co op has its own friendship system, separate from island characters. Each pair of players raises a shared level through Friendship Tasks, no matter who hosts. You can do 3 tasks per level each week; finishing a level refreshes the limit, and otherwise it resets on Monday. Levels belong to each pair, so a new friend starts at level 1.
Open the task list from the Multiplayer app or the multiplayer icon next to the mini-map, and claim rewards there while playing with the friend you earned them with.
| Level | Unlock |
|---|---|
| 1 | Basic Gifting (most furniture and non-clothing items) plus 1 Friendship Bead |
| 3 | Friend Cabin: invite your friend to move into one of your cabins |
| 5 | Stamina drains slower near your friend |
| 7 | Stamina Boost: a temporary extra stamina ring |
| 9 | Teleport to Friend |
| 10 | Auto-Pickup of nearby items |
| 13 | Clothing Gifting |
| 15 | Shared Pickup: both players get basic materials either one collects |
| 16 | Speed Boost near your friend |
Levels 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18 and 20 add paired emotes, starting with High Five. The task table runs to level 20, which takes at least 31 weeks from the start. Level 1 and every level from 6 to 20 also award Friendship Beads, which you can trade with Keroppi for furniture from past events. He offers one random item a week, your first trade costs 1 bead and later trades cost 2, and guests can't trade with the host's Keroppi.
07
Multiplayer quests
Only a few quests need two players, and each one has to be hosted on your own island:
- Friends From Afar (Keroppi): host a session, take a selfie together for the level 1 task, collect your Friendship Bead, then show it to Keroppi. This opens bead trading.
- Vacation Homes (Chococat): unlocks after Friends From Afar while hosting a friend at level 4 or higher. Use "Invite Friend" on an open cabin's sign. Your guest doesn't need to decorate it.
- Spooky Secrets (Kuromi): a four-part Haunted Mansion series with two-player Basement Library puzzle rooms. It needs a friend at level 2 or higher, several story quests and friendship level 5 with TOPHAT, with a 7-day wait between parts.
There's also a weekly quest, "Adventure Together," that gives 1 Strawberry Crate when you complete any Friendship Task with another player.

Multiplayer not working? Fixes to try
When the code won't connect, the wiki's troubleshooting list covers most cases:
- Version mismatch: both players should check their store for game updates.
- Expired code: codes change or expire, so ask for a fresh one and keep the app open.
- Wrong platform: cross-platform play doesn't work, and Switch 1 can't join Switch 2.
- Connection: a weak connection or a firewall can block play. Try Wi-Fi instead of mobile data.
- Minimized app: on a phone or tablet, switching away from the game can break the session.
- Device clock: set the time automatically. Out-of-sync time turns off multiplayer, and changing your date manually can badly damage a save.
- Restart: fully close the game, or restart the device.
- Apple: set Game Center to "Allow With Everyone" under Screen Time's content restrictions, sign out of Game Center and back in, and turn on iCloud.
- Switch and PlayStation: check that your Nintendo Switch Online or PlayStation Plus membership is active.
